Carpool/Ridesharing in Sicily

Bla Bla Car

Living in Hong Kong, I believe that many of you know what is “泥鯭的” (Car Pool/ Ridesharing). In Tsuen Wan, every morning, some “泥鯭的” will take a ride for 4-5 people who may not know each other but, also work in Fo Tan, for around $20 each. Once arriving at Fo Tan, people get off the taxi nearby their offices, saving the cost and time from waiting for mini-bus with long queue and also sharing the taxi cost with some strangers.

So what about in Sicily? There is a similar service provided by BlaBlaCar, on its website, it has operated in many countries, such as Germany, Spain, Brazil, other European cities, India, etc., it also said that all passengers are covered by insurance for free, too (with partnership with AXA).

Transport is always an important element during your travel. In those developed countries and cities, trains, buses, coaches are convenient with frequented choices, however, in Sicily where public transport is already not a good option for tourists, usually with less frequency, e.g. only one in the morning and another one in the afternoon, Bla Bla Car is indeed quite a good choice.

Last time when I was in Sicily, I wanted to visit Marsala for its Salt Pan from Trapani, however, June is not the peak season and the only choice getting there is Train. But the timetable was really suck, the first bus in the morning is 6:54am and the 2nd one is 12pm!!!! Cost: Euro3.8. I really don’t understand why there’s no other train service in the whole morning?

Anyway, without choice, I decided to try Bla Bla Car.

Luckily, I searched that there is a local called, Giuseppe who drives from Trapani to Marsala, and vice versa every day from Monday to Friday, and the set off time is around 9am. He just charges 3euro per person, which is indeed a similar price as taking train. Therefore, I sent a message via Bla Bla Car and hopefully could get response from him. (as in the website, it showed that he didn’t get online for quite a few months) Of course before sending message to him, I did check others’ comments and at least, he did offered rides to the others in the past. Good comments from the others of course would be of great help!

And I received his reply after around 10 minutes! BRAVO! After a few message exchanges, I told him we stayed near the port and agreed on the waiting location, exchanged phone number, etc. As after all I haven’t met him and didn’t know who he is, I didn’t want to promise for the return ride first, although it would be great if I can do so.

On the next day morning, we waited for him at the agreed location. I didn’t know how he looks like but it’s luckily that we were the only Asians there so it would be easier for him to locate us. After 5 mins, he arrived with his car (it’s quite a new one how lucky we were!) and he’s very nice and friendly. We talked for a while during our trip, since my husband doesn’t speak Italian and he sat beside him (that’s better as it was our first time taking his trip), so they barely chatted at all.

After arriving at Marsala, he said that he would drive back Trapani at around 6, if we wanted to, he could give us another ride, too. Of course, after this pleasant trip, I said yes! But I gave him 6euro first for this morning ride although at the beginning, he said we can give it to him after our return trip.

Talking about Bla Bla Car, I did research about this company and its policy on its website before sending message to Giuseppe. And indeed, they not only operate in Sicily, but also other European countries like England, Germany, etc. So I think it’s trustable. And at least, it saved me a lot of money from renting a private car to Marsala!

This was all my own experience on BlaBlaCar, afterall, please go to its website and study the details, check the FAQ and decide yourself whether it’s safe or not.

Epilogue: Giuseppe owns a IT company (but only himself as staff), he lives in Trapani and his office is in Marsala, therefore, he drives to work every day for 30 mins and back home afterwards. This has been last for 30 years! He doesn’t speak good English so we communicate in Italian. He has a son and a daughter, the son is studying University in Central Italy. He said that in the school, they have to learn French and English but if they don’t use it often, they just forget it!

The Happiness of Travel - Sicily

Day 8 – FAVIGNANA!

Marseilles!

================

This is a marvelous trip to Sicily! This was the fourth time I have been to Sicily but the different of this trip was that, I could finally get there during SWIMMING SEASON!!!!!  Previously I went to Sicily in the month of April, May and September and I couldn’t enjoy the blue blue sea and clear water instead of just staying on the beach and enjoy the magnificent view. (of course it was good enough by just sitting on the beach indeed)

Therefore once I decided my trip in June this year, the only choice of course was Sicily! Favignana and Lampedusa are my dream places~!!!

Transportation:
I didn’t fly with Qatar this time, and I chose Lufthansa as it was not that expensive, and the most important reason was that, it has connected flight to Palermo, Sicily! This perfectly matched my plan and saved me the money from buying another flights to there by local airlines and the time!

For Lampedusa, a small island located south of Sicily, (it is indeed more close to Tunisia), as June is not the peak season, there are only flights from Palermo, Milan, Bologna by Alitalia. Or you may take overnight cruise from Agrigento which is not cheap indeed. So I took the direct flight from Palermo. Infact, more flights are available starting from late Jun operated by other airlines so July and August would be a better season, but also mean that it will be crowdy on the beach.

Itinerary:
Day 1 –  Arrived Palermo for a night, and took flight to Lampedusa the next day morning. (I have been to Palermo before, so it’s good staying at Palermo for around half day and hanged around)

Day 2 – Early flight to Lampedusa at 8am, flight duration: ~1.5hr, arriving at around 9.30am. Most of the hotels offer free shuttle (public transport is not convenient on the island, to be honest, so that’s why we also rented a scooter to go around the island, too!)

Day 3 – Isola dei Conigli, of course! It was ranked no.1 by Tripadvisor users in 2013 as the most beautiful beach in the world. That was when I heard about this island!

Day 4 – Lampedusa. Flying back to Palermo at 4pm, so I still got more than half day there. (As the airport is very small, you just have to get there 30-45mins before your departure time.)

Day 5 – Originally planned to stay in Palermo for a night as the coach to Trapani cannot match my flight schedule. However, luckily that I found a B&B which offered free transport to and from Palermo Airport and the price a night is not expensive!!!! So we went to Trapani directly and saved at least 2-3 hours travel time and money, again!

Day 6 – Erice, a small hill town near Trapani. Wanted to visit there for a long time and it’s good for a day trip from Trapani.

Day 7-  Marsala,  its salt pan attracted me a lot but, I realized that there were no salt pan in June, but only around August to September when the weather is very hot! I don’t know why I couldn’t get this information from the internet, otherwise, I would plan to visit Wine cellar instead as Sicily is also famous for its wine!

Day 8 – FAVIGNANA!  Another highlight of my trip this time. I have been to Favignana (Isole Egadi) few years ago, just did some cycling and visiting the sea but I was falling in love with it! The blue blue sea and the clear water  is soooooo beautiful and so I planned a night on the island.

Another point is that I have had the most delicious BLUE MUSSEL on the island that I haven’t had elsewhere! The mussels were sooo fresh and smooth~ (you couldn’t understand how it feel until you tried it! That’s what I finally convinced my husband until he tasted it!)

Day 9 – Back to Trapani in the late afternoon. Took a cooking class there.

Day 10 – Terrasini  - Citta del Mare, this was not planned in my itinerary at the beginning. However, as I changed my plan and brought Euro 2016 tickets, I finally could try the TOBOGGAN (the slide which directly goes into the sea!)

Day 11 – Went to the Palermo airport direct at around 6pm for Marseilles in France.

Day 12 – Marseilles  and Euro 2016, ENGLAND VS RUSSIA

Day 13 – long way trip back to Milan for my flight back to Hong Kong….

I have changed my plan several times and it did wasted some money on flights/hotel bookings, but it worth it as I have gone to the places I LONGED TO GO for ages!

Remarks:
The public transport in Sicily is really not that convenient and tourist-friendly. Not frequent timetable between cities, but I would say that it’s not really that bad especially on delays/cancellation afterall.

In view of communication with the locals, it was okay if you were in big cities like Palermo, Trapani or Catania, however, most of the people there, e.g. in hotel, B&B, restaurants they didn’t speak English. This was the only time that I found that I speak better Italian than English, because even you tried to speak slowly in English, word by word but they barely understood and there was a time that the Host of a B&B asked me why I didn’t speak in Italian instead as I spoke better in Italian!

And again, I would say that Sicilians are really so friendly!

Regarding the safety issue, it is not the old days and there may still have some Mafia, but no, it’s very safe in sicily, much more safer than in other European cities. I think maybe because they are not those big cities like Rome or Milan, you won’t find too many beggars, or Gipsy on the street. Of course, I always say that if you are a careless people, absent-minded, and just didn’t keep your wallet/belongings in your bag or a safe place and it won’t be safe for you even in Hong Kong.

Last but not least, this was my fourth time to Sicily and if you are planning for your first trip there, this may not be the best itinerary to see all the popular cities. I’m thinking to write another article on some suggested itineraries in Sicily later! Stay tuned!

(Fallen in love with Trapani) (Trapani, Sicilia)

Trapani

The beauty of Sicily, is not only from the picturesque scenery but it is because of the passion and the hospitality of the locals.

Trapani is one of the coastal cities in western Sicily. Some flights from Spain or other European cities fly to the Birgi Airport of Trapani. (Most of the flights choose to fly to Palermo, the capital city of Sicily or Catania, the second largest city of Sicily instead)

Many people said that there is nothing special or worth to see in Trapani and a day there will be far more enough. Maybe because I didn’t have much expectation when first arriving Trapani, it turned out to be a big surprise for me.

It took me 2 hrs to fly from Giorna, Spain to Trapani, and most of the people like to head to Erice (situated on a hill above the sea and Trapani) or the seaside town, Marsala which is famous for its marine area with salt ponds. Instead, I chose to stay at Trapani for 2 days and began my exploration of the beauty of Sicily.

Trapani has a marvellous coastal line. Whether it’s at the sunset or at dawn, its fantastic scene just made me speechless. During sunset, the sea is as calm as a mirror, the reflection of the golden sunset together with the highs and lows of Mediterranean Italian architecture, unveils the myth and the beauty of Sicily.

Staying in Trapani, you can also visit Aegadian Island (Isole Egadi), a group of small mountainous islands off the northwest coast of Sicily. Comparing to the Eolie Islands (Isole Eolie), Egadi may be less known by the tourists.

From Trapani to Egadi it just takes you around 20 mins by ferry (of course, there is a cheaper one with an hour’s trip), it is perfect for a short day trip out there. With the blue sky and the green sea (yes, it is green to my opinion!), people there make their living from tuna fishing, (as the water are known as the “highways of tuna fish”) and that is why you shouldn’t miss having tuna dishes for lunch or dinner when you visit there!

Sicily is the motherland of the Mafia. Many said it’s dangerous to travel in Sicily (even I heard the locals said so). But during my 10-days trip in Sicily, what we felt is the warmth and passion of Sicily instead of dangerous, which you cannot find in any other large European cities. Maybe Sicily is not a popular travel destination of people from Asia, I haven’t seen any Asian in Trapani, thus when we were there, people always look at us with a friendly smile! A Sicilian even said HI to us across the street! And we got a free ride from them when we missed a bus stop visiting the Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) in Agrigento! The driver and his friend even asked if they need to pick us up after our visit!

The stunning and romantic view at Sunset

Taking ferry to Favignana costs around 9 euro one way! It's not cheap indeed!

What you can do on the island? Let's rent a bike! It costs around 5 euro for a day and we cycled for 2-3 hrs and visited less than a half of the island!

Why I fall in love with Sicily? One of the reasons is the blue blue sea. I just can't express how much I love the sea in Sicily! And since it's still not as popular as other European cities, at least it won't have too many tourists around

The map of Favignana. Basically this island can be divided into 2 part, the pier is in the middle of it

You shouldn't miss having seafood in Sicily! I'm not so into mussels when I am in Hong Kong, but I just couldn't resist the freshness of the mussels on the island!
